Justice has been done in Nirbhaya case by the court: Goel

·         Fast-track courts should be set up in all districts of Delhi, set max. time limit of 3 months for disposal of rape cases: Goel
·         Number of women cops should be increased immediately, modern police force needed for Delhi: Goel

The Delhi BJP today said that justice has been delivered by the fast track court’s verdict in December 16-Nirbhaya case in which the four convicts have been awarded death sentences for committing the gory crime.

Delhi BJP President Shri Vijay Goel said, “Justice has not only been done but it appears to have been done in this case by the court. This verdict will hopefully instill the fear of law among perpetrators of crimes against women. However, the moot question is that why do people have to come on roads and hold protests and demonstrations to get justice.

From Jessica Lal case to Nirbhaya case, the outpouring of public anger ultimately led to speedy investigations and disposal of such cases. However, even after so much of public glare, it took more than 8 months to dispose off this case. One can imagine what would be happening in thousands of other cases.”

Shri Goel said, “On this occasion all the stakeholders need to take stock of the status of women safety in Delhi. The bitter fact is that despite so many announcements after December 16 case by the Delhi government, Delhi women feel even more unsafe today.”

To make Delhi a safer city, responsibility must be fixed and officials be held accountable for rising crime in the city in general and crime against women in particular.

Delhi requires better policing and stricter enforcement of rule of law. Fast-track courts should be set up in all districts of Delhi in sufficient numbers for speedy trial of rape cases and these courts must dispose of the cases within three months.”

Shri Goel further added, “Focus must also be given to proper rehabilitation of rape victims in Delhi as they face discrimination at societal level. They must be provided with an environment that helps in dealing with the psychological impact of such incidents and leading a normal life.”

The Nirbhaya case exposed the very functioning of the government machinery right from issuing license for public transport buses to patrolling by police and keeping strict vigil in the city. Still in many areas of the city, basic concerns of security are not addressed. These issues range from street lights even on and under the fly-overs to the regular patrolling and movement of the PCR vans.

The conviction rate in cases involving crime against women in Delhi is very low at just 15%. Despite intense public scrutiny and pressure, even the Nirbhaya case took almost nine months to come to its logical conclusion. This aspect of delivering justice to victims of gender crime must be addressed earnestly. All these loose ends need to be tightened on priority basis so that a repeat of December-16 like incidents could be checked.

There is also a need to change the attitude of society. Gender discrimination continues to exist cutting across difference sections of society.  There should be total elimination of gender discrimination against women. Society and political leadership must work together towards this end.

The Delhi Police, on its part, lacks number of personnel especially women police personnel to deal with the crime against women in Delhi. There number stands at a meager 7 to 10 per cent of the whole force. The strength of police force and the proportion of women cops in it should be increased with a focus on giving adequate representation to women in the force to make it more gender sensitive.·         Justice has been done in Nirbhaya case by the court: Goel
