Police extortion in the name of verification of antecedents by stopped : BJP Legal Cell writes to Police Commissioner

Shri Anil Soni ,Convener- BJP Legal Cell has written a strong worded letter to The Commissioner Of Police at the “extortion” taking place at the Police Station level from ignorant aspiring MCD candidates across party-lines. It has come to our knowledge that the modus operandi of local police officials is that whosoever applies to have his criminal antecedents verified, he is first asked to make a payment of Rs.250/=(which by RTI application would be only Rs.10/=). Once Rs.250/= is paid, the prospective candidate is asked to come after 10-15 days (beyond 26th March, last date of filing nomination papers) to collect the character certificate, at this people get disheartened and frustrated and then are compelled to cough out money as per the belly of the local police to get it earlier.

Shri Anil Soni has asked The Commissioner Of Police to immediately take measures to stop the “extortion” and corrupt practice and also educate people that such certificate is not required by the Election Commission and only true information in the nature of Affidavits duly attested in Form 21 & 22 are to be attached with the nomination (Form No:2) by the candidates in the MCD elections. This will stop the horde of people across party- lines crowding inside police stations for a “character certificate”

A copy of the letter of The Commissioner of Police has also been sent to the Delhi State Election Commissioner to apprise the prospective candidates through the Returning Officers.
