Delhi BJP has demanded the Chief Minister and DERC Chairman that until the CAG completes audit of all the three private power companies, they should not be allowed to hike the power tariff.
BJP Delhi Pradesh President Shri Vijender Gupta has said that there are clear indications that the power distribution companies shall again recover quarterly fuel surcharge from the power consumers of Delhi in June, 2012. Due to this consumers will have to pay more. The private power companies are fully pressurizing DERC to get permission to increase power tariff w.e.f. 1st July, 2012. Delhi Metro, DJB, Indian Railways and the power consumers of Delhi have opposed increase in power tariff in their plea before the DERC which appears to be inclined to allow increase power tariff.
Shri Gupta told that the case for CAG audit of the accounts of power companies is pending before Delhi High Court. In view of the interest of the power consumers, Delhi Government should file an affidavit before the Hon’ble High Court requesting that until the accounts of power companies are not audited by the CAG, the Court should ban increase in power tariff. On 1st July, 2002 the Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had said that there are many benefits of privatization of power in Delhi and privatized power distribution. There is stipulation in the agreement for privatization that the Government and DERC shall together end the monopoly of power distribution by the three private companies by the year 2009. New power companies shall be allowed in this business so that there may be healthy competition between the power companies and the people may get benefit in the form of decreased power tariff. But the Government has not taken any step in this direction.
The power companies were also required to fix their Standard of Performance, but they have not framed the Standard of Performance till date. They are working in an arbitrary manner and due to this the consumers are losing. It was also provided in the agreement that the performance will be reviewed from time to time. But this has not been done till date. Delhi Government had also framed rules to impose penalty on the companies for bad performance, but the companies have not implemented it.
BJP Delhi Pradesh President has warned the power companies, Delhi Government and DERC that they should not play with lakhs of power consumers and their interest. New power companies should be allowed to enter in this business so that the power tariff may come down. It is the responsibility of Government and DERC that the interest of the consumer is given highest priority. It has been seen that the DERC and Delhi Government are more worried about the profit of power companies in place of worrying about the consumers of Delhi. He told that the Government, DERC and power companies should be ready to face public movement by the BJP in the interest of the consumers.
